The CBR Theory Exam

The CBR car theory exam is designed to test whether you understand the rules, signs, and safe-driving principles needed to participate responsibly in traffic. The exam contains 50 questions that cover three main areas:

  • Traffic rules and road use: speed limits, priority, lane use, roundabouts, special manoeuvres, safe following distance, and how to behave in different road environments (Built-up areas, motorways, Autowegs, etc.).

  • Traffic signs and markings: recognising and correctly interpreting all major signs, signals, road markings, and their exceptions.

  • Risk and awareness: identifying potential hazards, understanding what safe behaviour looks like, and knowing how to make the right decision in a given situation.

You’ll need to show that you can apply these rules in a realistic, practical way, not just memorise facts. Many questions test your ability to use common sense, spot dangers early, and choose the safest response out of several options.

A standard exam gives you 30 minutes to complete all questions. If you’ve booked an exam with extra time or individual supervision, you’ll have 45 minutes. This gives you more room to read questions carefully, process the information, and avoid rushing.

The question formats vary. You can expect:

  • Multiple choice questions

  • Yes / No questions

  • Image-based questions where you choose the safest action

  • Scenario questions that ask what the rules require in specific situations

The CBR aims to test not just your knowledge, but your ability to think as a safe driver.

Good preparation really makes the difference. By practicing with mock exams, repeating tricky topics, and learning how questions are structured, you build the confidence and accuracy you need to start your driving journey safely and of course, PASS for SURE!
